Oakland Cemetery
At Oakland Cemetery, I saw a lot of graves, and the Cemetery was huge. The Cemetery was also beautiful with the flower and trees. Then we went to the Old Jewish Section to learn about the people there. We also visited the Jewish Section, The African American Section, The Confederate Section, and Slave Square. It was a great experience to see.
First we saw an old man that was on the top of his mausoleum stone. His name was Jasper Newton Smith, so one of the things we know about him is that he hated neckties. Jasper Newton also wanted his statue to face the entrance so the people could greet him. He also made his money by opening a brickyard after the Civil War. Then we saw Dr. James’s grave. He was the first person in Atlanta to be buried in Oakland Cemetery. He always had a fear of him being buried alive.
